Majestic machines
11 August 2010
The display of vintage farm tractors and implements at The East of England Show (18-20 June), provided by Members of The Peterborough Farm Machinery Preservation Society enabled visitors a grand opportunity to view some truly noteworthy early agricultural machines, reports Noel Bridgeman. Returning to Peterborough once again was The Ivel, where 106 years ago in 1904, it was awarded a silver medal by The Peterborough Agricultural Society (see main pic). Exhibited by David White, this 1903 Ivel Tractor weighs in at 1.5 tons with a tank full of water. The power is provided by a horizontally opposed, water cooled two-cylinder four-stroke engine of 177 cubic inches. Transmission consists of one forward and one reverse speed. About 500 were built with many being exported around the world. Many more historic tractors each with their own interesting variations of design were being exhibited, this being a superb opportunity to get up close to view them first hand and note the deferent methods required to start them and drive them around.Monty magic

THE best part of 500 tractors descended on Old Buckenham over the Easter weekend for the National Tractor Road Run. Tractors from the far flung corners of the country set off on the 25 mile journey from Tibenham airfield on Sunday 4 April. The highly successful event was this year organised by Tivetshall Old Ram Tractor Club, the proceeds will go towards the East Anglian Air Ambulance. A full report of the event will appear in the June issue of Tractor magazine, but to whet your appetite here are a few images of the day. MORE than 40 vintage and classic tractor drivers braved biting winds and deep mud to take part in a working day in aid of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance at the hastily-rearranged venue of TAG Farming & Hire Ltd near Mansfield, Notts, on Wednesday 30 December. Paul Ducksbury gave his recently-purchased ex-Alwin Blatherwick Doe Triple D an outing with a 14ft, 15-tine ripper that also belonged to Alwyn.
