Majestic machines Gallery
The display of vintage farm tractors and implements at The East of England Show (18-20 June), provided by Members of The Peterborough Farm Machinery Preservation Society enabled visitors a grand opportunity to view some truly noteworthy early agricultural machines, reports Noel Bridgeman. Returning to Peterborough once again was The Ivel, where 106 years ago in 1904, it was awarded a silver medal by The Peterborough Agricultural Society (see main pic). Exhibited by David White, this 1903 Ivel Tractor weighs in at 1.5 tons with a tank full of water. The power is provided by a horizontally opposed, water cooled two-cylinder four-stroke engine of 177 cubic inches. Transmission consists of one forward and one reverse speed. About 500 were built with many being exported around the world. Many more historic tractors each with their own interesting variations of design were being exhibited, this being a superb opportunity to get up close to view them first hand and note the deferent methods required to start them and drive them around.
