Annual Gas Up day
By: Tony Hoyland
EAST Devon Tractor Machinery and Engine Club members brought out their tractors and stationary engines into the spring sunshine for their annual ‘Gas Up’ day on 15 May.
The turnout included some previously unseen projects that had been worked on over the long winter. The day also gave the chance to dig out unwanted items to sell in the small auction, and for members to generally have a catch-up. The turnout of tractors and engines was the highest ever seen at the picturesque Woodford Barton site on the banks of the River Otter, Ottery St Mary, Devon.
The day was also tinged with sadness as it was the first since the passing away of Steve Martin, president of the East Devon Tractor Machinery and Engine Club. A pictorial tribute of Steve and his tractors was on display as a mark of the club’s respect.
Steve was one of the five founder members of the club, 34 years ago, and took on the role of treasurer at its inaugural meeting in January 1976. He also served as secretary, vice-chairman and chairman, and was elected president in October 1995, succeeding Wally Balsdon.
Steve’s whole life had involved agricultural machinery, spending his career in agricultural engineering with Norringtons of Exeter. It was here that he forged his great love for and knowledge of Fordson - and later - Ford tractors. He brought this knowledge and a great enthusiasm into the vintage tractor movement and performed the role of club president in a most distinguished way. His support and encouragement to members over many years will be greatly missed.
