Land of Our Fathers
By: Tony Hoyland
Farmers David and Roy Barker watched with pride as their sons, Patrick and Brian presented their latest venture at Lodge Farm, Westhorpe recently. Along with supporters and journalists, they were there to see the launch of `Land of Our Fathers’ a DVD programme made in collaboration with Second Sight Productions of Tiptree. It tells the story of Lodge Farm since it came into the Barker family’s possession and how in recent times, Patrick and Brian have made it their mission to create an environmentally responsible business.
The cousins have put a great deal of time and effort into increasing the range of wildlife on their land and feel they are creating a blueprint for other farms to follow. They’ve also been spreading the word on how these methods are compatible with a high-yielding modern arable farm. And people have been listening; Patrick and Brian have been given several accolades for their work including FWAG’s Silver Lapwing Award.
Those present were given a preview of this fantastic programme which shows the farm at work throughout the year, details Patrick and Brian’s environmental work, and also explores the farm’s Tudor links with input from local historian, Clive Payne. Guests were also treated to a viewing of the family’s vast collection of bygones and memorabilia and left with a clear understanding of this farming family’s appreciation of the past, and their vision of the future.'
Land of Our Fathers runs for 100 minutes, priced £16.99 +£1.75p&p and can be obtained from Second Sight Productions. For further information visit www.secondsightproductions.co.uk
