Kent County Agricultural Society has commissioned a hardback full colour book that will be launched at the Kent County Show on Friday 16 July.

Let the show begin

Let The Show Begin is a history of the Society since its formation in 1923, the first show in Gravesend, the war years, the show’s time at Mote Park in Maidstone and finally its move to a permanent site at Detling in 1964.

HRH The Duke of Kent has lent his support to the volume by writing the first of three forewords, the other two being written by Lord Astor of Hever, president and George Jessel, chairman. The book was researched and produced by the Kent County Show team with Sarah Sturt, Kent Life magazine responsible for editing. Ether Creative the design agency responsible for the new Kent County Show website and 2010 branding was asked to design the book layout.

The book takes the reader on a journey through nine decades with photographs from the Society archives and courtesy of the Kent Messenger archives. The book pays homage to the men and women who ensured that the Kent County Show continued to grow in stature and become the county’s largest three day event. Details are included of the visits by Sir Winston Churchill, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Kent, HRH Princess Alexandra, TRH The Earl and Countess of Wessex and HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip who visited in 1989 to celebrate the Society’s Golden Anniversary.

The book will be launched on the first day of the Kent County Show at 10am on Alan Day House Lawn and will be available for purchase at a price of £15.
