THIS photograph shows test pilot George Aird ejecting from English Electric Lightning XG332 at very low altitude on 13 September 1962...

Lightning strike!

As a tractor driver in a field close to Hatfield airfield watches on, no doubt pleased he wasn’t working further over in the field! The camera that the photographer was using had just two exposures left, and the picture was published in newspapers all around the world at the time.

Thanks go to Jarrod Cotter, editor of Tractor’s sister publication Aviation Classics; the story behind this dramatic scene is featured in the current issue.
