On land and sea
By: Web Editor
ON A recent trip to Beaumaris, Anglesey, I stumbled across an M3 Submersible tractor unit. I have subsequently found out that there are many around the coasts of the UK and are used for moving lifeboats in and out of the water.
The questions I have are; who makes M3 submersible tractor, what’s its history and is it possible to buy an ex-RNLI one through a surplus-type outlet? Perhaps there’s a feature as information is at best, sparse.
Bill Nelson,
email.
Ed: There is good article on this subject featured in the March 2011 issue of Tractor if you are looking for further information. The M3 is produced by Clayton Engineering and is based on a Ford skid unit and fitted with a watertight hull. The company has been around for 25 years and its tractors are dotted all around the coasts of Britain. You could also try the bookazine, Tractor Data - The Fordson Major Years 1945-1964, also available from the publisher Mortons which has a good article on the County ‘Sea Horse’.
