Special worms
By: Web Editor
SEEING the Rotary Hoe trencher (Alec’s Cuttings No 21, March Tractor) took me back to about 1943 when I repaired one for the Glos War Ag in the North Cotswolds. This machine was fitted to a Fordson and had Rotaped tracks as on your picture.
When I took the creeper gearbox off which was fitted in place of the drawbar cap, I was surprised to find the drive for it was by a shaft about one inch in diameter coming through the centre of the worm. The output of this gearbox was, I think, splined onto the worm so that the worm was driven from the rear instead of the large transmission gear at the front. I don't know whether Rotary Hoes had special worms made or did they modify the Fordson one somehow? I did not have a parts book or have to dismantle the tractor any further so I don't know how the drive shaft took the drive from the gearbox or how the worm was running free in the large transmission gear.
I have also included a photo which shows a two man hedgecutter taken in 1960 being repaired in the farm workshop of SJ Phillips & Sons (Kemble) Ltd.
