Welcome... January 2012
By: Tony Hoyland, Editor
The first thing on the ‘to do’ list this month is to thank all those who have been involved with the ninth Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show held in November, for which we include an extensive report this issue.
Among the exhibits at the Newark Show was this Track Marshall 70 Crawler prototype, powered by a Perkins R6 engine (circa 1958); it is now restored and owned by Robert H Crawford & Son, Frithville.
The organisers at the Newark Showground now hold many prestigious events each year on the site and the management of the entire event from concept to completion reflects their professional attitude gained through these experiences. For this particular show, however, once these attributes are married to the enthusiasm and drive of the volunteers and club members who help build up the show, it appears there is no limit to what can be accomplished.
These volunteers give up many hours of their own time, often working late into the night to ensure that everything is in place. This year was no exception and in the afternoon the day before the event, the feature marquee was still almost empty. Michael Hart, chairman of the Notts Group NVTEC and charged with the marshalling of the tractor exhibits into position, simply said: “It’s going to be a long night!”
But by the next morning everything was in its rightful place, ready for the public gates to open – not bad for in excess of 700 tractors and a grand total of some 940-plus exhibits. And if you were still in doubt about what a little enthusiasm could do, then you just had to go and visit the Blue Force stand, which I am sure has set a new precedent at the show and would not have been out of place in the vast halls of the NEC Birmingham, for example, where I have seen many exhibits of a similar nature which have only been possible with the aid of a massive budget.
When people ask me what Tractor and Farming Heritage Magazine is all about, it makes life a lot easier when I can say – well have you ever been to the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show? The event incorporates many of the items that are regularly on show in these pages from the vast range of tractors and implements through to memorabliia and rare breeds. And I was pleased to see that East Anglia and Midlands Hereford Breeders Association staged its inaugural Calf Show as part of the Native & Rare Breeds Exhibition – it will add yet another dimension to the overall show in years to come.
Mortons Media, the publisher of this magazine, is proud to be one of the main sponsors of this event from the very start and the team looks forward to being a part of its continued growth in future years.
As we only have a finite number of pages to give you some flavour of the show, we have created a gallery of images from the show for you at www.tractormagazine.co.uk
The theme announced for the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show 2012 will be Perkins derivatives as the featured tractors.
